After leaving the countryside to settle in the city, industrial designer Ferdinand Fraulob could not bring himself to throw his organic waste in with the household rubbish: so he designed Activaterre, the first easy-to-use, plastic-free wormery with a modern look, to bring composting to city dwellers. He teamed up with Poterie Siegfried-Burger & Fils, a family business making traditional Alsatian pottery since 1842. The device has a patented harvesting system: the user feeds the composter from the top, drawing the worms upwards, while the denser compost settles at the bottom, where it can be collected without disturbing the worms or lifting heavy loads. All materials come from renewable resources and manufacturing is local.
